Sharing good-news stories, adventures & poems about Costa Rica & the Pura Vida Lifestyle every day!
Kevin had a challenging day. . Ah, Friday the 13th. A day already infamous for bad luck, and this one decided to make an entrance right at dawn.

It all started with the alarm clock. A normal, routine thing, right? Not today. Today, my reflexes apparently thought I was a ninja. I reached out to silence that obnoxious beep, but instead of gracefully tapping it, I sent it soaring off the nightstand. The poor clock hit the floor with a crash that sounded like it had just lost a fight with gravity—and my bedside table. Pieces everywhere. But hey, at least the noise stopped.

Still groggy, I shuffled my way to the bathroom, hoping for a nice, warm wake-up shower. You know, something soothing to set the day right. I turned the hot water tap, and, surprise! The handle decided it had had enough of this life and came off in my hand. Brilliant. No big deal, I thought. I can handle this—until I realized what awaited me: a freezing cold shower. Fantastic. Nothing says Good Morning quite like ice-cold water splashing over your sleepy body.

Shivering and teeth chattering, I finally made my way to the kitchen, ready to warm up with my beloved morning coffee. But, as fate would have it, my trusty coffee cup—the one I’ve used for years, my loyal sidekick through thick and thin—chose this moment to end our relationship. As I went to lift it to my lips, the cup’s handle betrayed me. It came off in my hand like some kind of tragic breakup scene. The rest of the cup, along with my precious coffee, crashed to the floor. I was left standing there, heartbroken, holding nothing but the handle, while my caffeinated dreams pooled on the tile.

At this point, I was beginning to feel like the universe was playing a cruel joke. My solution? Go back to bed. Yes, that seemed like the safest option. A reset button for the day. But as soon as I got comfortable under the blankets, nature called. With a sigh of resignation, I dragged myself out of bed and headed to the bathroom, feeling wary of any further betrayal by household objects.

I stood there, staring at the porcelain throne. My brain flooded with suspicion. After the day's events, I couldn't help but wonder what would go wrong this time. Would the handle break? The tank explode? Or would it be some bizarre incident involving me getting stuck somehow? I stood frozen, not daring to make the first move.

Twenty minutes passed, and I was still there, just staring, wondering if my bad luck would continue—or if this time, I'd finally win. Friday the 13th had already taken enough from me.

It’s only 10 a.m. What could possibly go wrong next?

Ever since 1813, "Friday the 13th" has been a challenging day for some. . if only in their minds. For Kevin, today. . well, things became challenging from the start!  But, he got through it and its SMOOTH SAILING in Costa Rica from now on!

We Don't Squirm as Much as We Used to. .
We used to have a fear of spiders, snakes and other little bugs that inhabit this earth along side of our 8 billion friends and neighbors! It would be safe to say that most of us humans do not care too much for the creepy crawlies that wander too close to us at times. Here in Costa Rica, it's a more common occurrence. It's not unusual to see a little spider on your curtains, a little lizard in your sink or a little snake at the front door.  It's just a part of life here. We've learned to become ONE with nature and live with the fact that we're not in charge!  They outnumber us! It's all good and it's an integral part of the Pura Vida Lifestyle!
We're Livin' Casual Now Here in Costa Rica. .
We had a closet full of clothes in our old life in Vancouver.  We stayed up with the styles. . she had dozens of pairs of shoes between us. . Wingtips, Loafers, Deck Shoes, Tennis Shoes, Oxford, Derby and Monk Strap!  So many outfits, shirts. . every brand name you could imagine. Thirty-plus years ago, we downsized, to say the least. We moved to San Jose, Costa Rica and liquidated quickly. Now, we both collect sandals and shorts. I don't even own a pair of dress shoes anymore. Just flippin' and floppin' for the rest of our lives! And this, my friends, is an integral part of the PURA VIDA Lifestyle!
We Love Our Many Flavors of Smoothies that We Create. .
We always loved milk shakes! Up in Canada over 30 years ago, we loved to go to the  local ice cream shop every Saturday afternoon. . chocolate was Kevin's favorite flavor and wow. . strawberry was mine!  I don't think we every heard of 'smoothies' back in the 90's! Nowadays in Costa Rica, with the dozens of tropical fruits available, we always try new combinations. And we bought a new blender, so we're ready to go!  When you're here in Costa Rica, you can have so much fun creating new flavors!  The sky's the limit! And, you can be assured that you're drinking something VERY HEALTHY!
Lazy Days are Required Here in Paradise. .
We used to have to always stay busy. We weren't happy unless we were out to a movie, out to lunch or out and about! We all get into this busy groove throughout our lives. We have to "GO OUT" and spend money for a "GOOD TIME." Here in Costa Rica, we have learned that we don't need those outside influences to enjoy our day.  A cup of hot coffee or tea. . watching a sunrise. . a couple glasses of red wine watching a sunset. . tending to the HUGE basil plant in our garden or wrestling with the cat. . we enjoy those lazy days at home. We're happy with the simple things. . and this is magic.  I almost forgot to tell you about our Saturday ritual of preparing a big pot of soup with all the wonderful ingredients from our backyard garden.  There's always some left over for our neighbors!  Now, THIS is living the PURA VIDA Lifestyle indeed!
Lending a Hand to All Who Needs Assistance. .
We have always been the type of people who are there for someone when something is needed.  We've all experienced a time in our lives that we just can't do it alone.  Sometimes, people like us get taken advantage of. But, normally, there's a wonderful feeling that warms one's heart when you can help someone who is in a bind.  We try to give back once a month.  If nothing comes up naturally, we'll be proactive and reach out to the local church and volunteer a few hours of our time to help with something that they need. Or perhaps we'll by a few bags of rice and beans. . maybe give a little cash to the pastor and he, in turn, shares it with members of his church that are hurting.  We've been blessed with this Pura Vida Lifestyle and it seems natural to pay it forward periodically.  Many of the Expats here in Costa Rica share thes values and we encourage you to do the same.  Karma. .
Living NOW in This Crazy World of Ours. .
We have lived a wonderful life. . full of surprises. . both good and bad! We've had our UPS & DOWNS. . success, failure, tragedy and loss. . happiness and joyous moments as well.  We are in the business of assisting individuals and families in their move to Costa Rica. . Legal Residency and everything else that comes with beginning a new chapter in one's life in another country.  We took a survey of our last 100 clients. . 87 of them said that they are simply looking for an alternative to living within the boundaries of absurdity and craziness. They want to step out to somewhere that affords them the opportunity to become less involved with the norm. They want to become ONE with nature. . enjoy the LITTLE THINGS in life and get rid of all the baggage. . both physical and MENTAL. . that they have collected over their lives.  We always tell them that they have come to the right place! Costa Rica is not perfect, but it's a great place to start a less-chaotic existence.  Once you get in the groove, there will be no doubt in your mind!
Letting Go. .
We never were very disciplined and set in our ways.  We always tried to go with the flow throughout our lives. One thing that we notice about many of our hundreds of clients throughout the years is that those who led structured lives tend to move towards the exact opposite as they enjoy their daily lives in Costa Rica. Our clients turn into our good friends and because of that, we stay in touch. The huge difference that we see after a year here. . even six months, astound us.  That is what the Pura Vida Lifestyle does to you. . it cleans out the cobwebs and allows you to become a spontaneous soul. . and there's absolute happiness and joy that comes with this new feeling. There's a freedom, a fresh breath of air.  It's life changing for many!
Living in Paradise & Not Enjoying it. . YET!
We are in the business of assisting individuals and families in their move to Costa Rica, specializing in the Legal Residency process. . helping our clients get their cedulas!  It's so much fun because we are involved in changing people's lives. . hopefully for the better. That usually happens! Sometimes, it doesn't. We share with you a quick story about Glenn.  He retired early from a midwestern police force. . big town, lots of crime, 24/7 chaos and always challenging. He's only 44 years old. . his entire life is ahead of him. He worked mostly the midnight shift, so he's seen the worst that society has to offer. His pension is more than enough to enjoy a wonderful, peaceful life here in Costa Rica. His first year here has been quiet and calm, BUT somewhat arduous.  Glenn is trying so hard to relax and go with the easy flowing patterns of the Pura Vida Lifestyle. But, he still finds himself WIDE AWAKE at midnight. But here in Costa Rica, there's no where to go. . no lives to save. . no society to protect. He shared with us this last week over lunch that he's having a very difficult transition. Life is peaceful here, but his mind, body and spirit are still walking the mean streets of his old precinct and longing for more "action." He's not giving up yet.  He's confident that he will adapt.  Say a few prayers for Glenn and send over some encouraging vibes so he can move on towards a wonderful life here in one of the happiest countries on the planet.
Getting a GOOD NIGHT'S Sleep Every Night. .
We are at the age when many of our fellow YOUNGSTERS don't sleep well throughout the night. Worrying about life, eating a big meal very late in the day. . perhaps pain in one's feet or cramps in the legs. . whatever the reason is, being here in Costa Rica allows us to put today away with no sorrows or regrets and LOOK FORWARD TO tomorrow.  Because of this, we both fall asleep quickly, go to our "DREAM STAGE" quickly. . waking up refreshed every morning!  There's no downside to getting a good-night's sleep! Now, if I could only quit snoring so loudly. .
