Salsa Lizano, a cherished Costa Rican condiment, was created in 1920 by Próspero Jiménez in Alajuela. Initially crafted in his bar, the sauce's popularity surged among locals, prompting a partnership with Próspero Lizano, who had the means to produce it commercially. This collaboration led to the establishment of the Lizano brand, with its distinctive green label, and the introduction of Salsa Lizano to the market. Over the years, the sauce became integral to Costa Rican cuisine, enhancing traditional dishes like gallo pinto and tamales. In 1991, the Lizano company was acquired by Best Foods, which later became part of Unilever, ensuring Salsa Lizano's continued production and availability. Celebrating over a century of tradition, Salsa Lizano remains a beloved staple in Costa Rican households and restaurants, symbolizing the nation's rich culinary heritage. It is very addicting, sprinkled on your morning GALLO PINTO, your afternoon CASADO and everything in between! It is now sold all over Florida and many other states across the USA. The flavor is unique. . Imagine if a sweet, tangy barbecue sauce and a savory Worcestershire sauce had a LOVE CHILD. Then that child took a vacation to Costa Rica and came back with a sun-kissed glow and a hint of Pura Vida! There you go!

Cartago, Costa Rica's oldest city, was founded in 1563 by Spanish conquistador Juan Vázquez de Coronado. Strategically located in the fertile Valle de El Guarco, it quickly became the administrative center of the region. In 1565, King Philip II of Spain granted Cartago its coat of arms, and in 1814, the Spanish Parliament honored the city with the title "Muy Noble y Muy Leal" ("Very Noble and Very Loyal"). Serving as the capital until 1823, Cartago was the residence of governors and influential families during the colonial period. There are many remnants of those early days that can be visited!
Throughout its history, Cartago has shown remarkable resilience in the face of natural disasters. The city endured significant damage from earthquakes in 1822, 1841, and 1910, as well as a volcanic eruption from Irazú Volcano in 1963. Despite these challenges, Cartago has preserved its cultural heritage and continues to thrive as a vibrant community. Today, it stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of its inhabitants and their dedication to rebuilding and preserving their city's rich history.
Cartago continues to thrive as a city that harmoniously blends its rich historical heritage with modern advancements. In the 2024 municipal elections, Mario Redondo Poveda of the Let's Act Now Party (Partido Actuemos Ya) was elected mayor, reflecting the community's active engagement in local governance. The city has also embraced technological progress, as evidenced by the pilot implementation of electronic voting during these elections. It is also known as the Gateway to the Irazu Volcano! Pura Vida!
In 2003, Nanci Wright-Stevens and her husband, Barry, moved to Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, Costa Rica, expecting a peaceful retirement. Instead, after meeting a hungry man and a young boy eager for school, they founded El Puente, a grassroots charity that provided food, school supplies and community support to the local Bribri Indigenous people for 17 years.
